About Us

On June 18, 1952, the UAW Local 247 of Thompson Products organized Thompson Product Employee's Federal Credit Union under Charter #7927.  It served employees of Thompson Products at 7881 Conant and the Experimental Department at 2950 East Woodridge Street. At that time they were both in Detroit, Michigan and only union employees and their immediate families were eligible to join.

There was not a formal office to conduct business, so some union officers and a few select employees collected money in the plant.  Your transactions were then recorded into a book that they initialed.  The funds were deposited in the credit union which at that time was located inside the UAW Office at 7715 Mt. Elliot, near the parking lot.

With more employees joining the credit union, it became necessary to have some type of office for members to do business transactions.  Plant Protection, which was located near the main entrance, had a small room in the back with a window during the change of shifts that was used for credit union business.

In 1958, the plant's name was changed from Thompson Products Michigan Division to Thompson Ramo Woolridge Incorporation, thus the name TRW Inc. emerged and the Credit Union became TRW Federal Employees Federal Credit Union.

In the 60's SHCFCU Inc. needed to expand.  They started looking for a new location.  One option was moving out of state, the other, which they chose on October 16, 1965, was to move to 34201 Van Dyke in Sterling Heights.  The Credit Union was given office space in the new building near the main entrance hallway.  Membership expanded to include salaried employees.  As the membership grew, it became apparent that more space was needed for the Credit Union.

In 1989, TRW Credit Union moved to 34236 Van Dyke.  It was still convenient for all members because it was across the street.  It remains at this location today.

When you look back at the last 50 years, many things have changed.  We have grown from 25 members to over 2,600.  We have our own office and permanent staff.  We started with a few simple services and have expanded to many different types of loans and savings accounts.  What hasn't changed is our $5.00 membership requirement.  In the early days, this could be reached by making small deposits (example $.10, $.15, $.25) when $5.00 was reached, that person became an official share owner who had a voting voice in how the credit union was run.  The only change to this policy is that $5.00 is required up front in order to become a voting member.

As you can see 50 years has changed our look, location and personnel, but our service is still the same.  The staff still remains as dedicated as ever.

Because our future depends on our members, the Board of Directors and the staff would like to thank all past and present members for their loyalty.  We are looking forward to serving you for another fifty years with the same quality of service and respect as the past fifty.
